The boys and I were decorating a Christmas tree together, surrounded by a variety of ornaments. As we sorted through them, one of the boys stopped and asked, “Daddy, which ones do we want to put on first?”
I replied, “Let’s start with the biggest ones.”
He thoughtfully responded, “Then the smaller ones will fit?”
I chuckled, realizing he was catching on to the decorating process. But a few moments later, it hit me: this isn’t just about Christmas ornaments; it’s a metaphor for life. We should prioritize the big, important things first. These are our anchor points, and then we fill in with the extras.
This made me reflect on my own life: What are my “big ornaments”? What needs to come first?
Take a moment to do a quick check for yourself. What are the “big ornaments” in your life that should be prioritized? Are you putting those things first? And what about the “filler” aspects of life—are they being added in only after the bigger priorities?
Sometimes it can be helpful to break down life into specific areas to evaluate.
